IN MEMORIAM: CLAYTON BROOKS
The Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) mourns the passing of Clayton Brooks, retired supervisor of the Town of Denning, Ulster County and founding director of CWC.
Clayton was also a founding member of the Coalition of Watershed Towns in 1991, answering the clarion call to ensure the continued vitality of the Catskills’ communities. He served on the Coalition’s Executive Committee through 1997. Following the signing of the historic January, 1997 New York City Watershed Memorandum of Agreement, which Clayton signed on behalf of the Town of Denning, he became one of the founding directors of the Catskill Watershed Corporation. Clayton continued as a CWC Director until his retirement in 1998 and helped establish many of CWC’s central programs.
For every year thereafter, Clayton and his sons, the late Michael Brooks, councilman of the Town of Neversink, and David Brooks, Supervisor of the Town of Denning would travel to CWC’s office for our annual meeting of member towns. Clayton always stood to speak during the public session and recounted the early days of the Coalition of Watershed Towns and his pride at the partnership that created the Catskill Watershed Corporation, and the continued accomplishments of CWC for the residents of the Watershed communities.
